When Clear met Magento

17th November 2011

Gavin went to London to meet Magento at the first ever British Magento Conference recently. Magento is our favourite open-source software for ecommerce sites so we wanted to find out more about Magento’s plans for the future, especially now it’s linked up with eBay and Paypal. It’s exciting stuff that promises to revolutionise the way we all shop online – again.

Here’s the top three things you need to know about the future of Magento

  • X.commerce is coming! There was a lot of concern around what X.Commerce would mean for Magento, with many people worried it could be the end for Magento. We now know this will purely be a new form of commerce with the potential to link systems together and to make it so much simpler for consumers to purchase your products online or in store. Simply put, it’s not just a new form of ecommerce, it’s a new form of commerce. For example, imagine how much your online basket abandonment rates could drop if people could just checkout by entering their paypal account, or how your retail premises could speed up queues by taking payment with just a password, as your PDQ machine could link with your website.

  • eBay’s acquisition of Magento has opened up the potential of Magento – it now has more resources behind it to achieve eBay’s ultimate aims of uniting buyers and sellers (interestingly, this says nothing about online…X.commerce is really not just restricted to online as you would imagine!)

  • We are currently using Magento 1.6 – the long awaited Magento 2.0 will be released in Q4 2012. This will feature performance improvements and a whole raft of new benefits that will benefit both customers and site administrators.

There’s even more exciting times ahead for Magento – if you want to talk to us about moving your ecommerce site to Magento just let us know.
